Joseph Benjamin Williston

Joseph Williston BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Joseph Benjamin Williston was born in Gastonia North Carolina on May 1, 1951, the eighth child of Dr. Thomas Harold and Polly Scott Williston. He attended local schools and went on to North Carolina Central University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. After college, Joseph joined the US Postal Service where job assignments took him to Greensboro and Memphis before he settled, twenty years ago, in his adopted hometown of Birmingham Alabama. It was here that he met and married his beloved Christie. After thirty years of service in the Postal Inspection Division, he retired. He then went to work in security with the Birmingham Public Library. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed travel, especially casino trips and Caribbean cruises. He loved the ocean, dating back to childhood summers spent on the beach at Topsail Island in North Carolina. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his daughter Sherri Anne Lunsford and son-in-law Gregory, his grandson Jackson and his stepdaughter Tanya Bailey, a brother Thomas and a sister-in law, Joanne Williston, six sisters; Judith Burkey, Patricia, Katherine, Polly, Harriett ("Scottie') and Emily Williston, two nephews, John Burkey and Robert Williston and five nieces, Nina Burkey, RoseMarie, Ericka, Shiree Williston, and Michelle Williams, grand nieces and nephews, cousins, an aunt, Katherine Weller and a mother-in-law he affectionately called, "Granny" Swindall. He also leaves behind a host of loyal friends from the Postal Service and the Birmingham Library as well as friends dating back to his early years in Gastonia and on Topsail Island. Joe was laid to rest in Forest Crest Cemetery in Irondale, Alabama on February 4th. He was above all a good and decent man who treasured his family and friends. He will be missed.
